For Christmas, my cousin and her husband gave my family a handmade pasta gift basket with products from three different gourmet brands packaged in a metal strainer (seriously, how cute is that?). I’ll be reviewing each of the products individually on Healthy Way to Cook, starting with this amazing Rustic Vegetable Marinara from Dave’s Gourmet Inc.
Dave’s Gourmet started when Dave set out to make incredibly hot hot sauce as a way of moving drunk, troublesome patrons out of his restaurant faster. Once his “Insanity Sauce” took off, Dave sold the restaurant and added 70 more products to his line of condiments, spices and snacks. While the company is still best known for its fiery sauces, Dave’s Gourmet pasta sauce collection boasts a wide range of organic ingredients and flavor combinations that you just can’t find anywhere else, like all-natural Butternut Squash sauce and the unique fusion Masala Marinara sauce.
My gift basket contained a jar of Rustic Vegetable Marinara sauce, which I actually ended up using not over pasta, but as a dipping sauce for mozzarella sticks and tortilla chips when I had a couple of friends over for New Year’s Eve. It had just a hint of heat, but that didn’t overpower the delicious flavor of roasted bell peppers, tomatoes, zucchini and eggplant. What I love about this sauce is its consistency and texture–it’s designed to be a pasta sauce, but it’s chunky enough to work as a salsa. It was a big hit with my guests and I can’t wait to actually try the leftover sauce with a bowl of pasta!
Dave’s Gourmet products are available in retail locations and online, but I was incredibly disappointed to see that this particular sauce isn’t listed on their website. I’ll do some hunting in grocery stores, but for now I’ve decided to attempt my own version inspired by this one. Check back soon for the recipe!
